Scholarship for Study at the University of Nevada, Reno.

A scholarship has been established in memory of George Shaw, who left us unexpectedly on April 16^th, 2005.  A longtime Nevada resident, George displayed a strong commitment to the State and was a strong advocate of the personal, social and cultural benefits of a college education.  George spent his personal life enjoying everything that Nevada had to offer and did not forget his rural beginnings.  In his professional life, George was involved in many projects in rural areas, volunteered his time to further the engineering profession and fostered the beginning of many successful engineering careers. George never hesitated to give of himself in any area, personal or professional. 

In order to continue to honor George’s life, work and commitment for excellence in Engineering, the principals at Shaw Engineering have established the George Shaw Scholarship Endowment at the University of Nevada, Reno.  

One scholarship is available each academic year for a student who is a Nevada resident enrolled at the University in the field of civil or environmental engineering. Applicants must register as full-time students at the University, must demonstrate a financial need and maintain a 3.0 GPA. Scholarship Recipients will be selected by the Dean of the College of Engineering and/or his designee(s).

The scholarship is funded solely by the interest earned from the principal (approximately 5% per year) and the Endowed Scholarship exists in perpetuity. The initial goal is to endow the scholarship with a principal balance of $100,000 so that the interest earned (approximately $5,000 annually) would be sufficient to cover the cost of in-state tuition and provide some funds for books and fees.
